Why is it important to set goals?
Now more than ever for a lot of us, our lives have been thrown right up in the air. Lots of change, lots of confusion and unfortunately lots of uncertainty. For some of us this can manifest itself in to feeling totally out of control. So the best way to take control is to set some goals around all the things you can control.
Setting goals has many benefits, at a time when you might not have much direction or structure to your life, goals will give you that and motivate you to work towards something. Achieving goals will you give a sense of accomplishment that you might currently be missing.
I know for some, it can feel like life has been put on pause, but it’s important to remember that it is only pause, it’s not stop, so at some point we’ll be able to press play again, so it’s almost the perfect time to set goals, make changes, and improve on areas we might not have ordinarily had the time for.
So what goals can I set myself that are going to be achievable but also challenge me enough to make it a goal worth setting?
Healthy body, healthy mind…
Food and fitness is a great place to start with setting goals, as they’re both areas of your life where you can take complete control.
Drastically changing the way you eat can have adverse effects so make any dietary changes slowly. Start to reduce foods that aren’t serving you such as processed food and refined sugar, and try and introduce more fresh food like fruit and vegetables - have a colourful plate and a varied diet.
Similarly a change in fitness should also be done slowly to ease the body in. One of the best things about yoga is that you can do it for free in your own home, planning you own practice, when you practice and how long you practice for. Or if you don’t want the pressure of planning, let someone do that part for you, plan when you’re going to practice and pick an online class to take.
Goals to eat better, move more and live an all round healthier lifestyle are achievable but challenging if they’re new things for you. Therefore when you start ticking the boxes of these goals you will feel inspired and motivated by your own efforts.
Professional and personal self development
These kind of goals really make you feel good about yourself. When you’ve challenged yourself to learn something, or started a course for a qualification - completing this can be one of the best goals achieved.
Learning doesn’t always have to come with a cost, the internet is full of free information. Perhaps you’ve always wanted to try and learn a new language, a musical instrument, set some goals, make a plan, tick the boxes.
Taking on a qualification can be a slightly bigger goal, as there will be a cost implication, however the end result could lead to new career opportunities or an addition to something you already do. This goal can actually lead to more income, and more stability.
Self care
In a time of uncertainty you can sometimes forget to take care of your mental well-being, or sometimes even notice that you need to.
How can I set goals about self care?
Set time aside to spend time looking after you, whether that be with a long soak in the bath one night a week, maybe it’s a face-mask every Monday, or perhaps you never spend money on yourself, so set a goal once a month to treat yourself to your favourite cake, or a new outfit.
Life can be really busy, so setting goals to make time to spend with family or friends, either face to face or through a video call can not only be an achievable goal but one that might challenge that busy lifestyle and force you to slow down and focus on you for a moment.
Whatever or whoever it is that makes you feel good, will only benefit you ultimately.
