How to become a Yoga Teacher
So you’ve decided you want to become a Yoga Teacher; but how? In order to gain the title of Yoga Teacher and be able to teach yoga, you will firstly need two things:
• Teaching certificate
• Yoga Teacher insurance
• Yoga Teacher insurance
This wasn't always the case with yoga. It was initially something that was handed down from a Guru to a student. When the Guru felt the student was ready and capable to guide students themselves, they were given a teacher status.
This was still happening as little as 15 years ago, but at that point yoga really grew in popularity and it was then decided that guidelines for teaching standards were required which would uphold a minimum standard for training teachers.
Before choosing to study a Yoga Teacher qualification, there are some questions you may have, and some things you should consider.
The first question you will ask yourself before committing to a Yoga Teacher qualification is “…am I good enough?”
The answer is YES! There’s no minimum experience required to study, you can begin at any stage of your own yoga journey. That being said, most people who choose to study yoga have developed an interest and passion over time, and through a regular practice.
Ultimately though it should be whenever you feel ready, all that’s really required is a passionate nature and willingness to learn.
Another question you may have for yourself is “…why do I want to be a Yoga Teacher?”
There are many reasons people decide to study a Yoga Teacher qualification.
Some choose to study to deepen their own practice and knowledge, some to attain spiritual enlightenment and some just for the physical benefits, and to have the ability to share all of these once they’re qualified.
Whatever the reason is, make sure the decision is your own. In order to enjoy your studies and want to learn more about what can sometimes be quite a complex subject, you must have that passion and willingness to learn as we mentioned before.
It’s important to remember that each time you step on the mat as a teacher, you are there for your students and not yourself. Yoga is a community, and as a teacher you will be there to hold space for your students, allowing them the time to have their stillness.
Something else you may ask yourself and need to consider is “…what is the cost of training?” and also “…how and where will learn?”
Training courses can usually cost anywhere from £1,000 up to £8,000, and they are over a set period of time where you would be required to physically be somewhere.
