But what do I wear to my yoga class?
If you’re new to Yoga, one of the first things you might think about after you’ve booked yourself on to your first class, is what on earth are you supposed to wear?
The short answer is something that isn’t restrictive, something you can easily move in ..that being said, there are some other things that you might also want to consider.
R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Something that EVERYONE should consider is respect!
When you attend an open class it’s important to remember that it’s not just your practice, it’s everyone’s practice. People will be next to you, in front of you and behind you. So although you might not have any inhibitions, make sure whatever it is you choose to wear isn’t going to cause offence to any other yogi’s!
For us girls something you should consider is a good fitting sports bra! What I mean by good fitting, is one that is going to keep everything where it’s supposed to be! The same can be said for you guys when choosing what to wear on your lower half. It needs to be something that will keep everything in place, no matter which way you bend.
In yoga we do lots of inversions, like Downward Facing Dog, Deep Forward Fold ..and sometimes the odd handstand maybe! The last thing you want is to feel is insecure moving in a yoga class, so whatever you choose to wear, just make sure it’s something that’s comfortable but that keeps everything in place.
Are those leggings Malasana proof?
For both girls and guys, leggings or tights are definitely something you can wear to practice in. Most guys opt for shorts but lots of brands do really great leggings for you guys too!
One of the deciding factors in wearing leggings or tights to the gym or to a yoga class, is can you see through them when they stretch? If the answer is yes - step away from those leggings!
In a yoga practice you’re going to be moving a lot, bending and stretching in lots of different directions, regardless of your gender, you don’t want leggings that are see through, trust us, it’s not a good look on anyone!
Equally you don’t want leggings that you feel the need to tug at constantly. Nowadays brands are more aware of this than they were before and we have the luxury of high waisted performance style leggings, which is perfect for making those tights stay put!
..and relax
When you look online at sports clothing, there are lots of beautiful pieces and plenty of choice, but one other thing to consider before making your purchase, is will it be comfortable to practice in?
In class we can spend quite a bit of time at the beginning and end on our mat, either lying on our backs, our bellies, or seated. So having anything that might dig in or be restrictive around the knees or waist probably isn’t going to be suitable.
The style of fabric can play a big part in this. Some leggings that you might initially think feel really sturdy, high waisted, thick, and basically everything you’ve been looking for - are so uncomfortable to practice in, and don’t even try and take them off if you’re still a bit sweaty - nightmare! You’re looking for all of the above, sturdy, high waisted, malasana proof - but also soft, softness is the key!
DISCOUNT!
As a Yoga Teacher you get discounts from a lot of really fantastic places so those super expensive leggings can be slightly more attainable. Most companies ask for a copy of your teaching certificate or proof via a website that you’ve been teaching. Some of these brands include Lululemon, Yogamatters, Sweaty Betty and Dharma Bums - so what are you waiting for, get that new outfit ordered and book yourself a mat!
